Question by : PHP or ASP,NET, bad response from our web team source? Our current website is in PHP and now we have requested our web-development source to redevelop it in ASP.NET. they come up with following issues, i just don't agree with this and needs help if it is really true issues. Issues they mentioned are as follow, •Based on Google Analytics for June, 2012 the total number of Visitors on our website were 19,389 with the average of 51.38% Returning Visitor & 48.62% New Visitor. •The unique Visitors of the website for June 2012 were 11,701. •The current website setup is performing well even over loaded •A windows based server with same setup will not be able to handle more than 1000 Visit requests same time. •You will feel slow web page browsing when there are over 300 connection same time. •ASP.NET scripts might be crashed if overloaded, or might put the user on wait in many cases. some important security issues. •Your website has been hacked at many events in the past which we have controlled by providing many security features within the current setup, and from past many months there was no hack happened. •Still we are getting a huge amount of hits from hackers, but with the help of quick logging and security measures we are able to cope it. •If we are going to move from Linux to Windows Platform there will be so many issues since Windows OS is very easy to be effected by any means like viruses, Trojan & trackers as compare to Linux where there is no chance of virus & Trojan. •We can control the risk by installing many firewalls & security checks which will also reduce the performance of server, but we cannot prevent it to happen since the server is giving access to the world wide web, and any executable stuff can affect the server from temporary to permanent data loss. Just develop the site using OOP in PHP. Unless you're planning to redesign your entire site it just isn't worth it. Your current site works fine from what i see you just have some security issues that can be improved upon by migrating to a linux OS and improving your coding via OOP (this promotes better encapsulations an scalability). But instead of re-coding your entire site in C# with .Net you can just make your functions into methods and your variables into properties within an individual class.

1) Operating system. Linux is better than Windows from a security point of view. They are wrong in saying it's impervious - it's not, 2) There's an overhead in serving pages generated by any script, compared with flat HTML. There are corresponding benefits now from a range of measures, eg compressed HTML, edge-servig of images etc, other measures. Do they offer any such help? 3) Traffic figures - are meaningless unless you say over what period. Number of simultaneous connections they're describing seems okay. 4) If you don't have a pressing reason to change forums then why take on the expense? Note however that a good freelancer would be able to do the transfer, including posts. (The degree of success depends on technologies but I've yet to attempt this task without at least being able to present old posts as archives - usually it's completely successful.) 5) If your current scripts are vulnerable to hacking, improve the scripts, It's not difficult. Bottom line: your hosts don't really support or understand Windows/ASP .NET - I personally wouldn't encourage a move to that from your current system though, on grounds of performance, security, load and available scripting knowledge.

You website developers will use languages that they are familiar with. Anything that can be done in ASP can be done with PHP. The majority of website development in the world is done in PHP. ASP.net will only really cater for Windows systems, were PHP systems will work whatever the server OS you have making it easier to manage and migrate. So whether you want to migrate to asp.NET or stick with PHP should depend on who is going to be developing your site. You may find it easier to switch developers if for some reason you want to have asp.net., though I can not see that switching to asp gives you any real advantage, but does tie to to a platform that is difficult to migrate from. The final decision I guess belongs to the person paying the bills, but the person who is gojng to work on the system needs to be familiar with the environment and happy using it to give best results.

As you suspect you are being given skewed and misleading information. It is generally true that once you have software working you need a compelling reason to change it rather than doing something new; changing something generally has no effect on users, adding something new improves the user experience. In the reasons given to you phrases like "a windows based server with same setup" seem meaningless, how can a Linux and Windows server have the same setup? The article cited is from a web design company selling LAMP solutions; they may be biased in favour of LAMP. There arguments for LAMP over ASP.NET are spurious. They faintly acknowledge that a compiled programming language like C# has advantages over an interpreted language, but don't fully understand the full significance of being able to completely separate business logic from page presentation. They also are not familiar with Windows Server as they seem to believe deployed machines have the Windows shell installed ("windows servers run clunky and with many un-needed packages and GUI" which probably means "Windows servers are never correctly installed or configured by us"). I also notice you can correctly type ASP.NET, whereas Comentum call it ASP.net, but that's just being picky. "...Open Source developers who contribute to the Open Source community are doing so not for financial gain" - seems to suggest that organisations like IBM and Red Hat are charities; I don't think that's true. "ASP.net relies on an available number of developers at Microsoft for making improvements and updates. There are less support contributors available to solve ASP.net challenges." - There are less potential contributors, but those that do contribute are amongst the best in the world, are persuaded to implement and fix even unpleasant things and lose their jobs if they don't. Do you want a hobbiest or a professional? I love the table at the end. That Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. don't use ASP.NET is very true. But from the figures in your article you are not building an Amazon or an Expedia; you need something appropriate to your needs (and have a poke around Expedia and see how its built, that's ASP.NET isn't it?). PHP is what you've got now and PHP might be most appropriate for your needs. There may be a compelling argument to move to ASP.NET or there may not. From what I read in your question the argument for PHP has been made very poorly; I'd seek people who can make good arguments both for and against and then weigh up what you should do. I am not normally a web developer, but I have been involved in hardening both ASP.NET and Apache based systems. For me ASP.NET wins over Apache because it allows me to use sound software engineering practices; those could well be overkill for your system so I would not really push one system over the other.

Your developers are obviously comfortable in PHP and want you to stay there. I can not imagine why you would change to .NET just for the sake of it. Unless you have a compelling reason, leave the site as it is. .NET will probably give you nothing useful you don't already have.
